Bulldogs take bite out of Indians - Daily Republic

FAIRFIELD — Vacaville High was the model of efficiency Friday night at Armijo’s Brownlee Field, smothering the host Indians 63-3 in Monticello Empire League play.

The Bulldogs (7-1, 3-0 MEL) scored on every possession. Seven different players crossed the goal line. Reed White tallied nine extra points.

Armijo (1-7, 0-3) struggled in every way offensively. The Indians earned five first downs and amassed a net total of negative-3 yards rushing. Jacob Chauvin threw for 83 yards, 40 of which came on the final play of the game.

Armijo coach Aaron Tolliver said that despite the lopsided outcome, he was proud of his players.

“We looked at it as a scrimmage against the best team you can find,” he said. “We didn’t quit in the second half.”

The Indians’ 3 points came after the Bulldogs fumbled on the first play of the second half and Victor Calderon booted a 35-yard field goal around the 8-minute mark.

The rest was all Vacaville.

Vacaville’s Melvin Mason and Curtis Goins had two touchdowns each, with Goins striking first.

On the Bulldogs’ first handoff of the game, Goins bolted 67 yards down his own sideline for a 7-0 lead.

With exactly 7 minutes to go in the first, Mason upped the tally to 14-0 after a 6-yard blast up the gut for a TD.

Vacaville’s third touchdown came after Justin Garner made a diving catch for an interception on a Chauvin throw. Swapping starter Coleman Christensen for Nic Ardave behind center, the new QB capped a two-play drive with a 14-yard dash to the left side of the line and into the end zone to give his team a 21-0 edge.

After an Armijo punt, it was Jacob Te’o who wound his way past the Armijo linebackers and exploded through the secondary for a 67-yard TD tote, putting the Bulldogs up 28-0 with 2:20 remaining in the opening quarter.

Two plays later, Vacaville’s Curtis Bleasdale stripped the ball out of Chauvin’s hands. Thirteen yards from the end zone, Ardave hit Goins on a screen pass for Vacaville’s fifth touchdown of the first quarter to go up 35-0.

The Indians went four-and-out on their next drive. On his final carry of the night and the second play of the drive, Mason hurdled a defender to stay in bounds on his own sideline en route to a 30-yard score and a 42-0 lead.

The final tally of the first half came with 2 minutes to go in the first half, as Daniel Mewborn burst through the line for 9 yards to gave Vacaville a 49-0 halftime edge.

After Calderon’s field goal, Vacaville made it 56-3 on its longest drive of the night, a 10-play, 80-yard effort that ended when David Mewborn ran 23 yards down the left side.

The scoring closed around the 6-minute mark of the fourth quarter. Pinned on its own 2 after Calderon’s stellar punt, Marwin Wilson ran 98 yards for a touchdown with an Armijo defender in hot pursuit falling as he reached to make the tackle.

The happiest guy on the sideline after Vacaville High School's 63-3 rout of Armijo Friday night was Marwin Wilson.

The Bulldogs senior backup ballcarrier suddenly became a celebrity after tying a school record with a 98-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Wilson was all smiles when he learned his electrifying run matched one turned in by former standout Evan Williams during the 2003 season.

"I'm feeling really good," said Wilson, who finished with 137 yards on six carries. "I found an opening and ran hard all the way down the field. I'm not the fastest guy, but I have a lot of heart."

Armijo couldn't muster much offense at all on its home field. Vacaville didn't have much time to work, either, after a running clock was put into play in the second quarter because of the lopsided score.

Vacaville scored on all seven of its possessions in the first half and led 49-0 at halftime. The Bulldogs had 357 yards of offense before the break with 290 yards coming on the ground.

Vacaville finished with 490 yards rushing. Quarterbacks Coleman Christensen and Nic Ardave added 68 in passing yards.

"We were able to work on some things we wanted to early in the game," Vacaville head coach Mike Papadopoulos said. "We were able to clean up some things and they did a nice job with those."

Vacaville improved to 3-0 in the Monticello Empire League and 7-1 overall. The Bulldogs host Vintage on Friday at Tom Zunino Stadium.

Curtis Goins had a 67-yard

touchdown run on Vacaville's opening play from scrimmage. He later caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Ardave. Melvin Mason added touchdown runs of 2 and 30 yards.

Ardave had his own touchdown on a 14-yard run. Jacob Te'o rambled 67 yards for a score. The Mewborn brothers also got into the act. Daniel Mewborn had an 11-yard touchdown run and David Mewborn added a 24-yard touchdown run.

On defense, Johnny Schupp had two sacks and Max Held picked up one. Curtis Bleasdale had a fumble recovery and Justin Garner intercepted a pass.

Armijo (0-3 MEL, 1-7 overall) put up its lone points in the third quarter on a 35-yard field goal by Victor Calderon that came after a Vacaville fumble.

Bulldogs travel to Armijo in MEL action

Vacaville at Armijo

"Don't think, just play," might be a good motto for the Bulldogs this week.

Vacaville (6-1, 2-0 in MEL action) has won five straight games going into tonight's clash at Armijo. The Indians (1-6, 0-2) have lost five straight.

Armijo lost to Napa 62-0 last week. Vacaville downed Napa 35-21 two weeks ago.

The Indians have scored just four touchdowns in five games since snapping a 17-game losing streak with a 29-13 win over Valley of South Sacramento in week two.

Chauvin Jacob has thrown for 289 yards and three touchdowns to lead Armijo. He also is the team's second-leading rusher, just behind Jairon Gacosta, who has gained 206 yards.

Vacaville made plenty of mistakes last week, but still rolled to a 56-7 win over Fairfield.

Week 7: Vacaville (6-1) @ Armijo (1-6)

Where: Armijo

Series: Vacaville leads 53-29-10

Last meeting: 2010, Vacaville won 69-0

Last week: Armijo lost to Napa, 62-0; Vacaville defeated Fairfield, 56-7

Of note: It’s the longest-running series in Solano County — they’ve played every year since 1926 and first met in 1901 — and tonight’s game could be one of the most lopsided in the rivalry’s history. That’s saying a lot since Vacaville won 69-0 a year ago, the biggest loss in Armijo history, the only one that tops last week’s 62-0 loss to Napa. . . . The Bulldogs have averaged 71.7 points per game against the Indians the last three seasons. Armijo’s last win over Vacaville at Brownlee Field was a 28-12 triumph in 1975. The Bulldogs are 17-0 at Armijo since.

Prediction: Vacaville 68, Armijo 0

Bulldogs trample Falcons in MEL rout

Mike Corpos- Daily Republic

FAIRFIELD — There was little for Fairfield High football fans to cheer on Senior Night as the host Falcons went quietly against Vacaville in a 56-7 Monticello Empire League rout.

Racked by injuries, Fairfield (1-6, 0-2 MEL) was missing a handful of starters and key reserves, putting the backups to the test against the odds-on favorites to win the MEL title.

It was quickly apparent that Vacaville meant business.

Despite turning the ball over to the Falcons three plays into the first drive of the game, the Bulldogs turned right around a picked off John Garrott’s first pass of the game — a two-handed grab by Jacob Te’o for a 25-yard return and a 7-0 Vacaville lead less than three minutes into the game.

Three plays into the ensuing possession, Fairfield again coughed up the ball. This time Vacaville’s Melvin Mason raced 40 yards to the house on the first play from scrimmage for a 14-0 lead.

It was just that kind of night for the Falcons.

“I didn’t have my quarterback, fullback, wingback, one lineman, linebacker and two others who were hurt,” said Fairfield coach Jack Canavesio, while also crediting Vacaville for executing its game plan. “They did exactly what they were supposed to do.”

Mason added another touchdown in the first quarter on a 19-yard run. He led Vacaville with 110 yards on seven carries with two scores.

Meanwhile, the lone bright spot for Fairfield was running back Jordon Harris, who ran for a game-high 133 yards on 12 carries and Fairfield lone TD.

With the Falcons trailing 35-0 late in the second quarter, Harris took a handoff from Garrott and plowed through the Bulldogs’ defense for a 73-yard touchdown run with 11 seconds left before the half.

That staved off the running clock for at least a while in the third quarter.

“We saw a couple things open up in their defense, and Jordon made things happen,” Canavesio said. “He was the workhorse tonight.”

Canavesio also credited backup fullback Damarie Richardson for doing a solid job, finishing with 45 yards on 13 carries.

Vacaville added three more touchdowns in the second half, the first a 53-yard sprint by Te’o for a 43-7 lead that triggered the running clock.

“It’s tough, but I told the kids you got to keep your heads up high,” Canavesio said. “Our goal is to win the last three games.”

Fairfield is on the road the remainder of the season, starting with Napa next week.

Vacaville (5-1) at Fairfield (1-5) Week 7

Fairfield (1-5) vs. Vacaville (5-1)

When: Today, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Fairfield

Series: Vacaville leads 30-13-2

Last meeting: 2010, Vacaville 70-48

Last week: Fairfield lost to Wood 32-14; Vacaville defeated Napa 35-21

Of note: The Bulldogs have scored in 22 of the 24 quarters in which they’ve played this season and will likely enjoy similar success tonight. They also continue a string of brutal opponents faced by the Falcons, who were buoyed last week by the return from injury of QB Keith Williams Jr. He threw for 183 yards while Fairfield was limited to just 46 yards rushing. . . . Vacaville, No. 7 in the latest Calhisports.com Division II North bowl rankings, is led by its dandy RB duo of Melvin Mason and Curtis Goins, who have rushed for 833 and 641 yards, respectively, according to Maxpreps.com. Fairfield has 765 as a team thus far. . . . Vacaville’s won the last nine meetings, none of which was closer than 15 points. Last year’s game saw the most points ever given up by a Fairfield team.

Prediction: Vacaville 61, Fairfield 20

Napa Football shows promise despite loss to Bulldogs

Marty James- Napa Valley Register

Napa High School lost its Monticello Empire League opener, falling 35-21 to Vacaville at Tom Zunino Stadium on Friday night. Despite the loss, Napa showed that it could play with Vacaville, listed No. 3 in the Sac-Joaquin Section Freeman rankings, No. 7 in the CaHiSports.com Division II North bowl rankings, and No. 16 in the CalHiSports.com Northern California CIF Open Division Top 20.

Melvin Mason (27 carries, 125 yards, two touchdowns) and Curtis Goins (16 carries, 78 yards, one touchdown) led the Vacaville rushing offense, but the longest run for Mason was 16 yards and the longest carry for Goins was 15 yards.

“We expected to face a good team tonight and we did,” said Napa coach Troy Mott.

Vacaville (5-1 overall) went in front 21-0 in the first half. The Bulldogs scored on their first two possessions, driving 66 yards in 13 plays and 69 yards in seven plays. Vacaville scored again in the first half, going 64 yards in nine plays.

“We worked hard at practice all week,” said Goins, who caught a 31-yard touchdown pass and scored from a yard out. “We came prepared and we just wanted it more. We thought it was going to be a hard battle throughout the whole game. This one is real big.”

Mason had scoring runs from three and five yards.

But Napa (3-3 overall) came back against Vacaville, as Zack Scheinholz’s 21-yard run with 5:44 to go in the third quarter cut Vacaville’s lead to seven points (21-14), capping an eight-play, 48-yard drive. David Hunt’s 16-yard run with 11:39 to go, capping a march of 69 yards in nine plays, pulled Napa within seven points (28-21).

“They’re obviously in the driver’s seat and they’re a good team,” Mott said of Vacaville.

Scheinholz ran for 118 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns and Hunt had 77 yards on 11 attempts. But after that, there wasn’t much in the way of offense for Napa, which was penalized 10 times for 60 yards.

The difference was Vacaville’s 385 yards of total offense and no turnovers and the fact the Bulldogs answered Napa’s two second-half TDs by scoring themselves.

Napa had 287 yards of total offense and one turnover.

Napa will look to break a two-game losing streak when it faces Armijo Friday at Memorial Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

Schupp an emerging sleeper - NorCal Preps

Standing at 6-foot-6 and 235 pounds, Vacaville defensive lineman Johnny Schupp is a player who draws attention from the time he walks on the field. With football skills to go with his size, he has received interest from a wide array of programs while still looking for his first offer.

The Vacaville defensive end has received heavy interest from Fresno State, Marshall and Albany with Utah, Harvard, Stanford, Navy, Air Force, Washington and Merchant Marine Academy being other schools recruiting him. One potential reason for a lack of early offers was Schupp only participating in a Fresno State team camp. He was a standout in his lone showing though.

"I want to go to a college that has intense practices to make to better," Schupp said on what he was looking for. "I push myself as far as I can go when I workout."

Also a decorated heavyweight wrestler in finishing 5th in the state last year, Schupp sees many advantages doing both sports.

"Cardio definitely," Schupp said of how wrestling has helped. "We are always running hills and in strength training in the summer building strength and stamina." He also added football has given him an extra burst on the mat.

Still, his passion is to play football in college and impressed in an early season viewing against Marin Catholic. He has a very good projectable frame with some explosion off the ball and plays with a good motor. If he can add strength, his game should really open up.

Stay tuned for more on Schupp the rest of the fall.
