Vacaville High School makes quick work of Armijo

The happiest guy on the sideline after Vacaville High School's 63-3 rout of Armijo Friday night was Marwin Wilson.

The Bulldogs senior backup ballcarrier suddenly became a celebrity after tying a school record with a 98-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Wilson was all smiles when he learned his electrifying run matched one turned in by former standout Evan Williams during the 2003 season.

"I'm feeling really good," said Wilson, who finished with 137 yards on six carries. "I found an opening and ran hard all the way down the field. I'm not the fastest guy, but I have a lot of heart."

Armijo couldn't muster much offense at all on its home field. Vacaville didn't have much time to work, either, after a running clock was put into play in the second quarter because of the lopsided score.

Vacaville scored on all seven of its possessions in the first half and led 49-0 at halftime. The Bulldogs had 357 yards of offense before the break with 290 yards coming on the ground.

Vacaville finished with 490 yards rushing. Quarterbacks Coleman Christensen and Nic Ardave added 68 in passing yards.

"We were able to work on some things we wanted to early in the game," Vacaville head coach Mike Papadopoulos said. "We were able to clean up some things and they did a nice job with those."

Vacaville improved to 3-0 in the Monticello Empire League and 7-1 overall. The Bulldogs host Vintage on Friday at Tom Zunino Stadium.

Curtis Goins had a 67-yard

touchdown run on Vacaville's opening play from scrimmage. He later caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Ardave. Melvin Mason added touchdown runs of 2 and 30 yards.

Ardave had his own touchdown on a 14-yard run. Jacob Te'o rambled 67 yards for a score. The Mewborn brothers also got into the act. Daniel Mewborn had an 11-yard touchdown run and David Mewborn added a 24-yard touchdown run.

On defense, Johnny Schupp had two sacks and Max Held picked up one. Curtis Bleasdale had a fumble recovery and Justin Garner intercepted a pass.

Armijo (0-3 MEL, 1-7 overall) put up its lone points in the third quarter on a 35-yard field goal by Victor Calderon that came after a Vacaville fumble.
