Offense Plentiful With Vacaville In Town - Folsom Telegraph

November 19, 2010

Friday night’s second-round playoff game between fourth-seeded Folsom and fifth-seeded Vacaville is an interesting match-up for more than the fact that both teams have Bulldogs for a nickname.

Both teams have dazzling 10-1 records, records that would lead some to believe that this could easily have been a section championship game if one of the teams were in the other side of the bracket and some team found a way to upset Grant.

Folsom does a bulk of their damage offensively through the air, as quarterback Dano Graves has passed for 2,644 yards and 48 touchdowns, all the while completing nearly 70 percent of his passes. Folsom is averaging 50 points a game for the season and nearly the same amount over their last five games.

Vacaville is averaging 52 points a game, but over the last five games are averaging 73 points a game. Vacaville does it with an impressive ground game, as they average just over 400 yards rushing per game. They have two running backs, Melvin Mason and Quincy Forte, who have both rushed for more than 1,000 yards on the season with 15 rushing touchdowns apiece.

Folsom’s played better defense between the two schools, but with large margins of victory, it’s hard to say how many points allowed for both teams have come when the game’s final outcome has already been decided.

“It should be a high-scoring game,” Folsom coach Kris Richardson said. “Vacaville scores by running the ball and they throw enough to keep you honest. It’s a dynamic offense that makes a lot of big plays. Even though they’re a running team, they don’t grind the ball out; they get a lot of big plays from their running backs, who are both fast and tough.”

Richardson said his team will have to line up correctly and read their keys and keep their eyes out of the backfield because Vacaville uses a lot of deception.

Folsom quarterback Dano Graves is looking forward to the game.

“I’m excited because it’s a team that we’ve never played before,” Graves said. “It should be a lot of fun. I think if our defense gets us the ball back we’ll be OK.”

Richardson added, “Vacaville is a really talented team. It’s a tough match-up but from the second round on everyone’s got a tough opponent in Division II. The thing we have in our advantage is that we’re playing at home on our field. I think that helps us.”
