Valley Christian senior running back Byron Marshall will miss a minimum of two games after suffering a partially separated shoulder in Friday’s loss to Cardinal Newman.
After two weeks of rehabbing, Marshall will be reevaluated to see if he can return this season.
“At that point he could be back on the field in another week or he could miss the season – or anything in between,” Marshall’s father, Greg, told the Mercury News.
Marshall was hurt in the first quarter Friday when he was gang-tackled and fell on his shoulder. He had an MRI on Saturday and his arm was placed in a sling.
Valley Christian (1-1) hosts Vacaville and Riordan the next two weeks, before a crucial West Catholic Athletic League game against Bellarmine on Oct. 7, which would be the earliest that Marshall could return to the field.
Greg Marshall, a strength coach, said the family’s focus is “all about getting Byron healthy,” and his son is rehabbing “with the approach that he will be back before the season is over.”
“He’s grown up around sports and he’s seen it all,” Greg added. “So he’s taking this pretty well. He’s just real competitive and wants to know what he can do to get healthy.”
Marshall is one of the top recruits in the country and is the seventh-ranked running back in the Class of 2012 according to ESPN. He rushed for 1,632 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior, and had 106 rushing yards and an 80-yard punt return this season before getting hurt.
